Humanitarian crisis still deteriorating, Libya still under fires (Pictures)

Humanitarian situation in Misrata "catastrophic"  —— rebel

Currently, Misrata, Libya’s third city, is still under heavy fires between Gaddafi forces and the rebels.

On March 7 , Libya death toll 'reaches 10,000'. The International Criminal Court estimated that 10,000 people had been killed. Over a month has now passed and during this period Misurata, a city of 500,000 inhabitants, has been under continuous heavy bombardment.

On April 9, an International Committee of the Red Cross ICRC) ship docked in Misrata, delivering enough emergency medical supplies for 300 people.

On April 11, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) report that more than 489,000 people have left Libya, the majority crossing into either Tunisia or Egypt. The latest figures report between 11,681 and 12,081 people stranded at camps and transit points in Tunisia, Egypt, Niger and Algeria.

THESE DAYS' violence caused shortages of essential supplies, electricity and water.

Continued violence in Misrata and renewed hostilities in Ajdabiya during the reporting period posed risks to the lives of women, children and other civilians as the crisis in Libya continues for a seventh week. Despite the delivery of aid, sustained fighting continues to result in shortages of essential supplies, electricity and water. OCHA received reports from Misrata that there are water shortages and local communities are relying on untreated well water for use in households and health facilities.

On April 16, for a over 50 days the Libyan city of Misurata has been shelled by artillery and hit by tanks and snipers, and for over 20 days has had its water intentionally shut off by loyalist forces. Sewage has been intentionally re-routed into water wells and as supplies run short, HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS are at risk of death.

On April 17, the UK is to hold "URGENT TALKS " at the United Nations about the "dire" HUMANITARIAN CRISIS affecting residents in western Libya.

On April 18,  ahead of the planned British mission, almost 1,000 people were rescued from Misurata by ferry, but the IOM said that THOUSANDS MORE were awaiting rescue.
"The ship docked in Benghazi straight from Misurata carrying 970 passengers on board," reported Sue Turton, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Benghazi, the rebel stronghold.

On April 19 -  The United Nations says it has been guaranteed humanitarian access to Misurata, while Britain says it will fund efforts to evacuate thousands of stranded migrant workers by boat from the besieged port city.

The SHELLING diminished Sunday, but it STILL killed eight people and WOUNDED 38, according to a rebel spokesman in Misurata, reached by Internet telephone and identified only as Mohammed for his security. On Saturday, as government forces withdrew, he said, 36 PEOPLE were killed and more than 100 were wounded.

"In addition, 150 hygiene kits, 20 cubic metres of food and 8,000 litres of water have been handed over to the Libyan Red Crescent Society and distributed in cooperation with their volunteers."

Still on Apri 24, there was no sign of a cease-fire, however, or negotiations. According to medical sources in Misrata, 11 people have been killed and 50 wounded in shellings and clashes with remnants of pro-Gadhafi forces.

And the SAME for the present moment - NO ceasefires —— Just ONE hour ago, NATO jets launched strike inside Gaddafi compound - 45 people were injured, including 15 who were seriously hurt, and some were still unaccounted for after the attack.

The humanitarian situation is STILL rapidly deteriorating in besieged Misrata.
