you said “I know.” Neil : Exactly! Jason : Well actually I’m a bit 5) relieved since I couldn’t figure out
how word of my flat tire had spread so fast. Neil : To be honest, I was a bit confused as to why you having an apartment meant you had a rough day. Jason : So you thought my apartment had some air leak? Neil : Yes, I guessed it was some problem with the window or door sea
C Jason : No wonder you look so surprised when I said I took the problem to them to get it fixed.
Neil : I know! I couldn’t imagine how you did that!! [both laugh] I should
really know better, I’ve lived here for a while now; still sometimes the
old ways come back to me. Jason : Are there a lot of differences in words like that between British English and real English? Neil : Hey! Careful there mate! I’ll have you know that English started in Britain, so I would say that makes our 6) version the real one. Jason : Maybe, [smiling slyly] but you guys can be so confusing! Neil : I guess so, any idea when your car will be ready?
Jason : Soon, and they’re going to bring it back for me when it is. Neil : That’s good service; I should get the name of your mechanic for

A Jason, Neil, Brenda and Val have met at a small café for lunch Brenda : Oh I wish I could have been there to see that! Neil : We call those crisps. Jason : Seriously? I told you, you guys are confusing. Neil : You all know what I mean when I say lift, right? All: Elevator! Neil : Right, how about if I say “he is a lorry driver.” Jason : [Playfully] It means he has a car and works for someone named Laurie?
Neil : Not quite , we call a big rig semi-trailer truck a lorry. Jason : My first 4)reaction is to ask why? Neil : Good question actually, even I’m not sure.
C Val : Oh I remember one, my friend once asked me to help her get something from the boot. Brenda : Please tell me that doesn’t mean you had to put your hand into her shoe. Val :No, it was what she called the trunk of her car. Neil :Right! And do you know what we call the hood? [no one seems to know] The bonnet. Jason : I’m not sure I could stop myself from laughing if I were over there and some 5) burly mechanic asked me to pop my bonnet for him. Neil : Now that you’ve got me thinking about it, there are quite a few of these word/phrase differences actually. Val : What we call an eraser you call a rubber. Neil : What we call a biscuit you call a cookie.
Brenda : Is it true that you call subways the underground? Neil : Yes, or we call it the tube. Jason : You know they are going to drop my car off soon, how about we finish this conversation back at my “flat”. Neil : Great idea, are you going to invite us up for a cuppa? [Brenda and Jason looked confused] Val : I know this one too, you mean have some tea. Jason :Well you could have just said that. Neil : Actually I did!
A
Elevator !

《 生 活 指 南 》 ( A Short Guide to Great Britain ) 。
Simplified Spelling Movement ,

Jason, Neil, Brenda and Val are all back at Jason’s home
Jason : Man, who would have thought a chance 1) encounter on the street
would lead to me discovering I don’t know how to speak English!
Neil : Actually it is interesting that we both are native English speakers
and yet there is so much that is different for us.
Brenda : No wonder students who study English can get confused.
Val : Especially when you consider the number of words that sound the
same, but are spelled differently and there is no way to know in a
conversation how they are spelling what they say.
Brenda : True, that is where 2)context becomes so important.
B
Jason : Yeah, but guys think about it, all the stuff we’ve learned today,
I mean except for lorry, I had heard all the words before, but I had no
idea what they meant for Neil.
Val : So again that comes back to context right?
Jason : Yeah, I guess it does. Honestly though it is a bit confusing.
Neil : Don’t worry, Jason, it goes both ways, I was pretty disappointed
the first time I bought tickets to a football game.
Jason : Disappointed, why?
Neil : Because I was 3)expecting what you call a soccer match.
Brenda : I would have been disappointed to go watch either.
C
Val : Actually this is the kind of stuff that makes me so happy to travel
different places.
Neil : Me too, it really is great to experience different ways of looking
at things.
Jason : I guess this means I need to get out more.
Neil : Sounds like a plan; maybe after you get your car back, we can start
planning to get out more.
Jason : Great! Oh yeah and now that I know the difference, I want to ask,
what do you think of my flat?
Neil : It is quite nice, but after all the 4) confusion earlier, I’m going
to stick with calling it an apartment.
Brenda : Good idea, you know what they say… “when in Rome.”
A
