Crisis in Japan: How You Can Help

Many CGI members are responding to the urgent humanitarian needs of the Japanese people in the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Please see below for information on how you can help. The Japanese government also recommends donating to the Japan Red Cross or Japan Platform. Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is coordinating organizations' offers of assistance.

  • AidMatrix is working in Japan to get in-kind support and transportation assistance delivered where it is most needed. To make a financial donation or host a fundraising drive, visit its website.
  • Architecture for Humanity is fundraising for reconstruction efforts in Japan through its website. It hopes to raise $200,000 for specific small scale building projects for local community organizations.
  • Google has created a Crisis Response page for Japan, listing up-to-date news and warnings, maps, disaster message boards, and information on finding shelter and missing persons. Google's People Finder, created in response to the 2010 Pakistan floods, has collected information on 194,400 people lost or located in Japan. To search for a missing individual, or to volunteer information you have, visit the Japan Person Finder page.
  • Habitat for Humanity plans to mobilize volunteers in Japan to work with other organizations in the initial clean-up and relief operation. Donate to its efforts here.
  • JPMorgan Chase committed $5 million to relief and recovery efforts in Japan. Customers will shortly be able to make relief donations through Ultimate Rewards, JPMorgan Chase's flagship rewards program.
  • The Lions Club Foundation has mobilized a total of $7 million in grants and donations to aid the relief effort in Japan. With 107,000 club members in Japan, Lions Clubs are providing immediate and long-term relief to rebuild communities in need. Members and non-members can donate here.
  • Save the Children has partnered with Zynga, a social network game developer, to make Facebook games beneficial for Japanese disaster victims. Players of games including Farmville, Cityville, Zynga Poker, Frontierville, Cafe World, Yoville, Z Bar and World With Your Friends can pay for certain crops and other items with credit cards. All proceeds will go to the Japan Earthquake Tsunami Children's Emergency Fund. Donate directly to Save the Children here.
  • The Western Union Foundation has donated $50,000 to Mercy Corps in support of Peace Winds Japan to provide shelter, food, water, blankets and medicine for survivors. The foundation also created a Japan Earthquake Relief Fund to match donations from Western Union employees, two-for-one for U.S. employees and three-for-one for international employees. Western Union has also activated a "No Transfer Fee" program to allow U.S. consumers to donate to Mercy Corps through the Western Union Quick Collect service (code city: Japan Relief, CO). Individuals can donate up to $5,000 until April 14, 2011.
