The China Post news staff--The Shihlin District Prosecutors Office yesterday discovered eight more juice products contaminated with toxic plasticizer DEHP from Jin Guoo Wang Food Co., a downstream factory of Yu Shen Chemical Co., the company that produced a clouding agent containing DEHP. The prosecutors also discovered that the contaminated juice products have already been distributed to 19 beverage sellers. The discovery came after prosecutors and police raided Creation Food Corp., a key distributor of Jin Guoo Wang's juice products located on Section 2 of Minquan East Road in Taipei yesterday afternoon. The company's warehouse in Yangmei Township in Taoyuan County was also raided.

Prosecutors seized as many as 5,829 cartons of juice suspected of being contaminated with DEHP, including pineapple juice, honey peach juice, almond juice, mango juice and blueberry juice.

Chiang Yu-mei, secretary general of the Health Department under the Taipei City Government, said that the orders for the eight DEHP-contaminated juice products supplied by Jin Guoo Wang were all placed after May 19, when Yu Shen had already informed its downstream factories that its clouding agent contained DEHP.

“This indicates that Jin Guoo Wang knowingly kept sellingDEHP-contaminated juice products after being notified by Yu Shen,” Chiang said.

As of yesterday, the number of DEHP-contaminated juice products sourced from Jin Guoo Wang has expanded to 14, and such products have been distributed to 19 downstream sellers in Taipei, New Taipei City, Keelung City and Taoyuan County.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) yesterday published a new list of DEHP-contaminated products, including five children's health care products supplied by Formosa Biomedical Technology Corp.

Great Difference Between Real and Reported DEHP Output

In related news, the EPA yesterday asked Nan Ya Plastics Corp. and Union Petrochemical, two leading producers of the DEHP chemical in Taiwan, to explain the remarkable difference between the volumes reported to the EPA and their real production volume.

EPA officials said that Nan Ya produced 330,000 tons of DEHP in 2009, and the output was estimated at 360,000 tons in 2010, but the production volume the company reported to the EPA was only 89,000 tons.

In addition, the total production volume of DEHP reported by local makers of the chemical reached only 109,000 tons in 2010, only 20,000 more than reported by Nan Ya.

Taiwan has conducted massive recalls of many dietary supplements and beverages since May 23, following the discovery of banned chemical plasticizers in clouding agents.

Manufacturers of five categories of food and beverages are now required to present certificates showing that their products are free of six common kinds of plasticizers, before the products can be put back on store shelves.

The five categories of products are sports drinks, juices, tea drinks, fruit jams, fruit syrups and jellies as well as dietary supplements in capsule, tablet or powder form, which all usually contain clouding agents. (China Post)
