Back in his office , Mr. Rader took out a     15    , wrote something on it , and handed it to me . With    16     eyes , I read , “ Do to others as you would have them do to you .” He said affectionately (深情地), “Jimmy , I want you to    17     I love you”.

I said good-bye , and for the first time I    18     a flicker of hope that somehow things would be    19     . With people like Mr. Rader in the world , there was hope , kindness and love , and that would always make a    20     .

You have waited 45 minutes for the valuable 10 minutes’ break between classes. But when the bell for the next class rings, you can’t   1   how quickly time has passed.

If you are familiar with this   2  , you’ll know how time flies when you are having fun-and

3    when you are bored. Now scientists have   4   a reason why this is the case.

Scans have shown that patterns of activity in the brain   5   according to how we focus on a task. When we are   6  , we concentrate more on how time is passing. And this makes our brains   7   the clock is ticking more slowly.

In an experiment   8   by a French laboratory, 12 volunteers watched an image   9

researchers monitored their brain activity.

The volunteers were told to   10   concentrate on how long an image appeared for, then

11   the color of the image, and thirdly, study both duration and color. The results showed that

12   was more active when the volunteers paid   13   subjects.

It is thought that if the brain is   14   focusing on many aspects of a task, it has to  15__  its resources, and pays less attention to the clock.

16  , time passes without us really   17   it, and seems to go quickly. If the brain is not so active, it concentrates its   18   energies on monitoring the passing of time.   19  , time seems to drag.

Next time you feel bored   20   , perhaps you should pay more attention to what the teacher is saying!

Some time ago, a fellow teacher asked me to be the referee(仲裁人)on the grading of an examination question. “Dan,” I    19     stammered out(结结巴巴地说), “if I had the choice myself, I would have    20    you.” That was all I could say. It was nothing, and yet it was everything.

A strange woman comes to my door one day in early March. It’s a rich area so we often have people selling things     1     --dusters ,make—up ,frozen foods—but she doesn’t look like

__ 2    saleswoman. She hasn’t got the patter(喋喋不休)either .She    3     smiles shyly and puts a card in my hand : “Amy Turner .Pet Portraits Undertaken.”

I    4    my fingernail along the cheap gold edge of the card and look at her ,waiting for      __ 5    .

“I’ll paint any animal in the      6     of your own home,” Amy Turner says . “Wouldn’t you like a nice picture of your loved one ? I’ve had      7     of dogs ,cats ,parrots ,prize bulls.…”

“Prize bulls !” I can’t    8    looking up and down our street .The    9     of any of my neighbours    10    bulls in their back gardens makes me smile.

“I don’t have any animals ,” I say as we look past each other ,She must be    11   some little cat or dog would come running down the hall to give the game away     12     it is the first chance I’ve had to     13     the air outside .It is one of those spring mornings when you wake up and find winter’s gone .Even the camellia in the garden     14     has flowered overnight ,pink blossoms which look shocking     15     the quiet greens and greys.

“Why are you still in your dressing gown?” Amy says ,turning her    16   back me . “It’s nearly lunchtime .Are you ill?”

“I’m fine,” I    17    . I’m not going to tell a stranger I’ve just been sick in the toilet upstairs and would still be    18     my fingers down my throat if the doorbell hadn’t rung. But now I’m not sure what to do next .Amy is still standing there. She doesn’t seem to think that not having a pet is a good enough     19     .

“I’m starving,” she says and I smile politely ,nodding the    20    you do before you say goodbye.

It was a half-mile walk from our small house to the beach road , where the    1___      would be waiting for us .But that morning Janet was much worse . She couldn’t make    2___       walk . And I couldn’t carry her . The path to the beach was steep and narrow and    3     at the water ‘s edge .

I was a stranger far from home . I didn’t know    4    to turn for help . But I needed it badly . I hurried down to the beach and I found help .Four fishermen were about to go out for their morning    5    . I told them about my sick little sister . Could they help me get her down the

6     ?I hardly got the words out of my mouth    7    they dragged their boat back onto the sand . They climbed the hill with me . One looked at Janet and they    8    their heads . They talked softly to one another . “   9     sick to sit in a chair,” one said .

“Better carry her    10    in bed ,” said another .

An iron cot (儿童床)   11    along the cliff ! I was frightened . How could they do it ?

12    the men told me not to worry . “Truly easy , truly    13    ” they said .

They tied a rope to each leg of the cot . Each of them threw a rope    14     his shoulder and held the end in one hand . I understood what they meant to do .    15     they carried the cot down the path , they would use the ropes to keep the cot    16     .But what if one of the men slipped and lost his balance ? What would happen to him –to the others-to    17    ? The men just smiled at my alarm. “That    18    will make us even more careful.” They said .

The men went down the path . Every    19     was a careful one . Always the cot was level , with never a bump . When they reached the beach road , they quietly lifted Janet into the taxi .    20    , they stretched her out on the back seat .

We made the morning train for Tokyo . And there an ambulance was waiting to take Janet to the hospital . The doctor told me that I had got my little girl there just in time . Janet would be all right soon .

In some cities , workaholism(废寝忘食工作)is so common that people don’t consider it unusual . They accept the lifestyle as    1     . Government workers in Washington , D. C. ,

2    , frequently work sixty to seventy hours a week . They don’t do this because they have to ; they do it because they    3    to . Workaholism can be a    4     problem . Because true workaholics would rather work than do anything else , they     5     have no idea of how to relax ; that is , they might not    6     movies , sports , or other types of entertainment . Most of all , they     7     to sit and do nothing . The lives of workaholics are usually stressful , and this tension(紧张)and worry can cause     8     problems such as heart attacks and stomach diseases .    9     , typical workaholics don’t pay much attention to their families . Their marriages may end in     10     as they spend little time with their families .

Is workaholism     11     dangerous ? Perhaps not . There are , certainly , people who work     12     under stress . Some studies show that many workaholics have great energy and interest in work . They feel    13     is so pleasurable that they are actually very happy . For most workaholics , work and entertainment are the same thing . Their jobs    14     them with a challenge ; this keeps them busy and creative .

15     do workaholics enjoy their jobs so much ? There are several    16     to work . Of course , it provides people with paychecks , and this is important . But it offers    17

financial security . It provides people with self-confidence(自信心); they have a feeling of satisfaction    18    they have produced a challenging piece of work and are able to say “I

The professor’s house, big and untidy, stood alone at one end of a huge garden. The place was totally uncared for, quite  1  and overgrown with all sorts of useless things.I

Once upon a time,bee-keepers killed their bees every autumn. Why,you may  1  .Well, the answer is this. To  2  some honey,bee-keepers and farmers used to  3  small Wooden boxes in a corner of the farmyard.Bees would come and fill the box with  4  .However, there was one way of getting the honey out without killing the bees.  5  they  used  to  burn  a chemical  6  to the box in order to  7  the bees and then take the honey.

Now.bee-keepers uses beehives to collect honey. In the  8  there are a number of wooden squares with spaces between them which can be lifted out.In late  9  ,the squares, which are now full of honeycomb are  10  out.  11  are put in a special machine and turned round and round very fast for several minutes.Turning the squares round and round like this forces out the  12  .Then the honey is collected and poured into jars.  13  that the  14  squares are returned to the hive for the  15  to fill with honey the following year.

Bees need food to  16  the winter. That’s  17  they make honey.Bee-keepers can do one or two things.  18  they can leave some of the honey in the hive for the bees to eat during the winter.0r else they can remove all the honey and  19  the bees with a mixture of sugar and water for the bees to eat  20

The Depression(萧条)didn’t make much change in my grandparents’lives. But it did bring an unending flow of men out of  1  ,drifting(being carried)from job to job,to the farm. The

“It isn’t entirely  19  there have always been such parents. But what was seen as strange
