常用的百科全书一般是：The New Encyclopedia Britannica （1985）《新不列颠百科全书》和Encyclopedia Americana （1983）《美国百科全书》。

International Encyclopedia of the Social Science (1968) 《国际社会学百科全书》（涉及人类学、经济学、地理、历史、法律、教育、政治学、伦理学、哲学、宗教、心理学社会语言学、艺术等）；

Encyclopedia of Education （1970）《教育百科全书》（内容包括教育哲学、教育史、教学管理、教学法与重要教育法规）；

Encyclopedia of World Literature in the 20^th Century (1967-71) 《20世纪世界文学百科全书》（收入大量关于文学家、文学运动、文学流派和国别文学的专门条目）；

Cassell’s Encyclopedia of World Literature (1965) 《卡西尔世界文学百科全书》 （收入10, 000名著名作家及其作品）；
