《冬天的骨头》讲述了一个17岁的小姑娘，为了家庭的完整，坚定不移地去寻找毒贩父亲的故事。
17岁的女孩蕾·多莉踏上了寻找父亲的路程。她的父亲是一个毒贩，为了交齐保释金，他抵押掉了自己的房子。走出监狱之后，多莉的父亲就消失了。多莉一定要找到父亲，否则自己和家人就要搬到密苏里欧扎克山脉的树林里生活。
对于多莉要出门寻找自己的父亲，她的家人和父亲的那些好友都保持了缄默。这一路上，多莉要一个人独自面对谎言、别人逃遁的借口以及她的亲戚为她“准备”的恐惧和闭门羹。她能找到自己的父亲么？她能得知人情冷暖、世态炎凉的世界真相么？
本片根据丹尼尔·伍德瑞尔的同名小说改编而来。丹尼尔·伍德瑞尔的另一部小说《Woe to Live On》曾经被李安改编成电影《与魔鬼同骑》。
丹尼尔·伍德瑞尔的小说《冬天的骨头》出版于2006年，小说的故事就发生在伍德瑞尔居住的密苏里州的树林里，描述了一个少女为了保住房子而踏上了困难重重的寻父之旅。《冬天的骨头》的篇幅并不长，但却花费了伍德瑞尔5年时间写成。小说没有过多的言辞上的修饰、也并不华丽，但是每一个句子却都经过了作者的认真推敲，整本小说也因此显示出来了令人难以置信的丰盈之美。这本小说也将伍德瑞尔送上了他梦想已久的美国一流作家的行列。《冬天的骨头》也被评论称为“像民歌一样美，像民歌一样原始”。丹尼尔·伍德瑞尔这么说自己的小说：“一个16岁的女孩，为了能生活下去，或者说她为了能离开自己的家而去寻找自己的父亲。其实，她是在完成一个救赎的举动。完成这个举动之后，她的灵魂才得以升华。小说中的故事大部分都是有真实依据和具体人物形象的。”
小说出版不久，本片的女导演德布拉·格兰尼克就读到了它，她被小说中一个个真实而且鲜活的生命所打动，几乎是毫不犹豫地，她便决定要把《冬天的骨头》拍摄成电影。德布拉·格兰尼克说：“我刚刚开始阅读，就被整个小说的气质和魅力吸引住了。不同于一般的流行读物需要靠搞笑的语言和夸张的故事来吸引人，《冬天的骨头》是一部安静、深邃的小说。几乎从一开始我就被故事里的人物、他们的命运、他们的生活吸引住了。每句对白、每一个场景、人物的每一个选择似乎就发生在我的身边。我非常乐意把这个小说拍成电影，因为我觉得，这就是真实。故事里的主角多莉，她的故事是我的最爱。她在小说里是那么的无助、那么的坚强又是那么具有不可抗拒的宿命感。”
为了改编好这本小说，导演德布拉·格兰尼克做了大量的功课，她先是和自己合作了很久的制片人安妮·罗西里尼、迈克尔·麦克多诺一起来到了密苏里州，特意拜访了作者丹尼尔·伍德瑞尔，并且还在当地居住了一段时间。
为了让整部影片更加具有密苏里州欧扎克山脉地区的本土特色，在音乐的选择上，格兰尼克更是煞费苦心，除了一些原创的音乐之外，影片中大量使用了欧扎克地区的当地的音乐，这些民乐听起来与众不同。格兰尼克说：“音乐能让影片脱胎换骨，能让一般的画面变得丰富和立体。在音乐上，我使用了很多当地的土著音乐，这些音乐让影片更自然也更流畅。让影片在画面之余更多了一份回味的空间。”
本片获得了2010年圣丹斯电影节剧情片的最高大奖，编剧德布拉·格兰尼克和安妮·罗西里尼以本片获得了影展的瓦尔度·绍特剧本奖。
