Iwata Ryuzo, a 75-year-old Japanese monk who also is called "the lonely apologizer," came to the Memorial Hall of the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders on May 1 to fast and apologize for the sins Japanese invaders committed.

The old man wears a white frock and a yellow cassock on him. He also carries several bales of cloth, which are marked by Chinese characters of "Xie Zui (Apologize)" and "Zhong Ri You Hao (China-Japan Friendship)."

"I, as a Japanese person, have to be here and to apologize for the sins of Japanese invaders to Chinese people," Iwata Ryuzo said to himself.

It is the third time he has come to Nanjing, and the first was in 2005.

He said he was not involved in the Japanese invasion of China, but he feels deeply sorry about the terrible results the war brought to Chinese people, especially the more than 300,000 Nanjing citizens who were killed.

"I am Japanese and I feel so guilty even though I was not part of Japanese army, so I decided to come to China to apologize for the sins of the Japanese and pray for the Chinese victims."

"I get a lot of help from people around me, including my brothers and sisters, some friends, and especially a former boss of mine when I worked for a bank, who likes China very much and offers me greatest help."
