Two Australian soldiers have been wounded after their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device while on patrol in southern Afghanistan, Australian Defense Department confirmed on Sunday.

The Defense Department said the two soldiers, who had been part of an Afghan National Police and Special Operations Task Group joint patrol.

It said they are in a satisfactory condition following the incident on Wednesday.

Shortly after the incident, the soldiers were evacuated by helicopter while the vehicle was destroyed to avoid potential use by insurgents. They are now being treated as outpatients at their Tarin Kot base.

"Thankfully their wounds were such that it appears they will make a full recovery," Chief of Joint Operations Lieutenant General Ash Power said in a statement released on Sunday.

"Their Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle took the brunt of the blast and was significantly damaged in the explosion."

The Defense Department explained that it delayed releasing information about the soldiers because they have to wait until the operation had concluded.

Following the latest incident, a total of 24 Australian soldiers have been killed, while 175 soldiers have been wounded in Afghanistan since October 2001.
