Marc Grossman, U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, has left for Kabul for regional consultations following President Barack Obama's announcement this week of a phased drawdown of U.S. forces from Afghanistan, the State Department said on Saturday.

Grossman, who started his travel on Friday, will stress U.S. commitment to "a long-term, enduring partnership" with Afghanistan, the department said in a statement.

"As part of ongoing consultations with Afghanistan's neighbors and international partners, Ambassador Grossman will attend a meeting of the International Contact Group, which includes more than 40 nations," the department said.

Grossman will also meet with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, National Security Adviser Rangin Dadfar Spanta and United Nations Special Representative Staffan de Mistura.

In addition, the special envoy will attend the third meeting of the U.S.-Afghanistan-Pakistan Core Group to support a process of Afghan-led reconciliation, the department said.

In a televised speech on Wednesday night, Obama ordered the drawdown of 33,000 troops by the summer of 2012, saying the United States was meeting its goals in Afghanistan. He envisioned the withdrawal of the remaining 70,000 U.S. troops by 2014, with Afghan troops and police taking over the country's security responsibility.
