Last night after dinner I told my family the bad news. I had this class assignment to monitor our use of energy at home for a week. Our family got an F.

Tuesday night my brother watched the same two-hour movie on his TV set that we were watching in the living room. Thursday Mom ran an entire dishwashing cycle for 3 cups, 2 plates, a knife and 3 little spoons. That's a lot of electricity and hot water down the drain.

Dad drives 28 miles back and forth to work alone. Two men he works with live right nearby, and they could carpool (合伙使用汽车) and save about a thousand gallons of gas a year. And me, I'm guilty too. I went out and left the radio blaring in my room all Saturday morning.

So last night at the dinner table we all agreed to do everything we could to conserve energy. Faster showers. Lower thermostats (温度调节器). Fuller care. (51) It's a fact that this country's using up energy faster than we produce it. I read that we may run out of oil — forever — in thirty ears. So terrible. (52) Unless every person in every house on every block does his part, the future looks pretty dim.

I'm getting more and more concerned about the future. Because that's where I'm going to be.

C) had the radio on when they went out                      D) watched TV programs separately

32. It is a fact that_______.

A) oil is getting less and less

B) the future is terrible with such a serious problem

C) the country will soon use up energy if we keep wasting like this

A) makes efforts to save energy, the future will be bright

B) stop using hot water washing dishes, we'll waste less energy.

C) rides a bike instead of a car, everything will be OK

D) has company while watching TV, nothing will go wrong

34. What's the main idea that the author want to convey in this passage?

A) We should conserve energy.                               B) Families will run out of energy.

C) To waste is a serious problem                             D) There is a waste at home.

35. The suitable title for this passage is ______.

A) What an Assignment                                          B) The Future is Dim

C) How to Save Energy                                          D) What a Waste

Task 2  (10 points)

Directions: This part is the same as task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 36 through 40.

Do you want to know something about the history of weather? Don’t look at the sky. Don't look for old weather reports. Looking at tree rings is more important. Correct weather reports date back only one century, but some trees can provide an exact record of the weather even further back.

(53) It is natural that a tree would grow best in a climate with plenty of sunlight and rainfall. It is also expected that little sunlight or rainfall would limit the growth of a tree. The change from a favorable to an unfavorable climate can be determined by reading the pattern of rings in a tree trunk. (54) To find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree trunk from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the other rings, then it is certain that plenty of sunny and rainy weather occurred. If the rings are close together, then the climate was bad for the tree.

Studying tree rings is important not only for the history of weather, but also for the history of man. In a region of New Mexico you can find only sand --- no trees and no people. However, many centuries ago a large population lived there. They left suddenly. Why?

A scientist studied patterns of dead tree rings which had grown there. He decided that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees. Trees were necessary to make fires and buildings. So, after the people destroyed the trees, they had to move.

In this instance studying tree rings uncovered an exciting fact about the history of man.

   A) how old the trees were

   B) whether in that area the climate was healthy or not

   C) whether a particular tree was healthy or not

   D) whether people took good care of the trees or not

39. Studying dead tree rings shows ____.

   A) where the people had to go                          B) what the people had to eat

   C) why people had to leave                              D) how the people left

40. The people had to leave the region of New Mexico because ____.
