Former top legislator Li Peng has published a book on the massive Three Gorges Project in which he attempts to convey his deep reflection on the world's largest hydropower complex and the development of its surrounding areas.
The book, "Li Peng on the Three Gorges Project," with more than 240,000 characters, has 68 reports, speeches, conversation records, articles and notes of Li regarding the project between 1984 and 2010 when he served as the country's vice premier, premier and top legislator before retiring in 2003.
The book traces the entire process of the scientific argumentation, democratic policy-making and eventual construction of the project, according to its publishers, the Central Party Literature Press and the China Three Gorges Publishing House.
Located on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River in central Hubei Province, the Three Gorges Project consists of a 185-meter-high dam, which was completed in early 2006, a five-tier ship lock, a reservoir and 32 hydropower generators. The project began in 1994.
The book helps readers, especially hydroelectricity workers and specialists, to better understand the significant role of the project in the country's economic and social development, the publishers said, adding that readers will also learn from the "successful experience" of the project.
Li, former chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, has previously written three works in diary form, respectively, on the Three Gorges Project, electric power development and nuclear power construction.
