Violent attacks in Kashi (Kashgar), Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomy Region, in the night of July 30 to 31 saw several innocent lives lost.

The accused perpetrators were all of Uyghur origin, but their ethnic background is no excuse for them to escape punishment for such horrible crimes.  According to media reports, some criminals involved in the attacks were killed at the scene.

These kinds of terror attacks have been increasing recently. Overseas extremists have been stirring up conflict between Uyghur and Han Chinese, while some Western media have shown sympathy for the terrorists. All these factors have contributed to the current discord.

We cannot claim that there are no ill feelings between the two ethnic groups, but this kind of discord among people of different origins is seen elsewhere, such as in southern China between local residents and migrants.

But what is unusual is that this social issue is usually painted differently when happening in Xinjiang. It will often be exaggerated by some extremists as arising out of ethnic oppression. Therefore, we should not only fight against these violent criminals who target the innocent, but also take a firm stand against these false theories.

Xinjiang is doing its best to create a place where different ethnic groups can coexist in harmony. But two things need to be made clear. First, in order to eliminate the threat posed by the extremists, more efforts need to go into building a united and harmonious society. Second, when violence happens, the attackers must be struck down no matter what ethnic backgrounds they hail from.

Ethnic unity has a solid foundation in Xinjiang, where different ethnicities are highly intermingled. The situation is better than in many countries that are wracked with ethnic conflicts. De facto segregation still exists in many Western countries.

Honestly, a perfect harmony between Uyghur Chinese and Han Chinese without any problems may be wishful thinking, no matter how hard the Chinese government tries. It is a reality the Chinese public has to face up to and deal with. But the existence of these problems does not give any legitimacy for these atrocious attacks.

The latest bloody assault took place during the busiest tourism season in Kashi. The violence took the lives of Han people, but also severely damaged the tourism industry, which is the prime income source of many Uyghurs.

The attackers are not advocating the interest of Uyghurs. They are public enemies of all of Xinjiang, all ethnicities included.

Telling the public what actually happened, not hiding the details, will help matters better understood.
