GUANGZHOU, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Police authorities in south China's Guangdong Province seized 10 people who were trying to sneak into Macao with the help of people smugglers.

Guangdong border police also seized four snakeheads who were escorting the stowaways, as well as a jeep and two vans they were using to transport the people over the border, a spokesman with the provincial border police headquarters said.

He said police received reports of the people smuggling ring in early June, saying it was based in Wanzi Town of Zhuhai City and was engaged in helping gamblers from inland provinces to sneak into Macao.

Police seized the first team of five stowaways and their escort at 1:30 a.m. Friday near Zhuhai's airport, the spokesman said.

Five other stowaways, accompanied by two snakeheads and a driver, were caught at 2:30 a.m. on a local expressway.

The stowaways were from Hunan, Ningxia, Jiangxi and Zhejiang.

In a preliminary interrogation, they told police they had been lured by the snakeheads into "making big money" at Macao's casinos, and had paid 1,000 to 5,000 yuan (156 to 782 U.S. dollars) each for the stowaway service.

Police are still investigating the case.
