Ah, homeward bound Igo!
Why not go home, seeingthat my field
and gardens areovergrown?
Myself have made my soulserf to my body:
why have vain regrets andmourn alone?

Fret not overbygones
and the forward journeytake.
Only a short distance haveI gone astray,
and I know today I amright,
if yesterday was acomplete mistake.

Lightly floats and drifts theboat,
and gently flows and flapsmy gown.
I inquire the road of awayfarer,
and sulk at the dimness ofthe dawn.

Then when I catch sight of my oldroofs,
joy will my stepsquicken.
Servants will be there tobid me welcome,
and waiting at the doorare the greeting children.

Gone to seed, perhaps, are my gardenpaths,
but there will stillbe
the chrysanthemums and thepine!
I shall lead the youngestboy in by the hand,
and on the table therestands a cup full of wine!

Holding the pot and cup, I givemyself a drink,
happy to see in thecourtyard the hanging bough.
I lean upon the southernwindow with an immense satisfaction,
and note that the littleplace is cosy enough to walk around.

The garden grows morefamiliar
and interesting with thedaily walks.
What if no one knocks atthe always closed door!
Carrying a cane I wanderat peace,
and now and then lookaloft to gaze at the blue above.

There the clouds idle away from theirmountain recesses
without any intent orpurpose,
and birds, when tired oftheir wandering flights,
will think ofhome.
Darkly then fall theshadows and, ready to come home,
I yet fondle the lonelypines and loiter around.

Ah, homeward bound Igo!
Let me from now on learnto live alone!
The world and I are notmade for one another,
and why go round like onelooking for what he has not found?

Content shall I be with conversationswith my own kin,
and there will be musicand books
to while away thehours.
The farmers will come andtell me that spring is here
and there will be work todo at the western farm.

Some order coveredwagons;
some row in smallboats.
Sometimes we explorequiet, unknown ponds,
and sometimes we climbover steep, rugged mounds.

There the trees, happy of heart, growmarvelously green,
and spring water gushesforth with a gurgling sound.
I admire how things growand prosper
according to theirseasons,
and feel that thus, too,shall my life go its round.

Enough!
How long yet shall I thismortal shape keep?
Why not take life as itcomes,
and why hustle and bustlelike one on an errand bound?

Wealth and power are not myambitions,
and unattainable is theabode of the gods!
I would go forth alone ona bright morning,
or perhaps, planting mycane,
begin to pluck the weedsand till the ground.

Or I would compose a poem beside aclear stream,
or perhaps go up toTungkao
and make a long-drawn callon top of the hill.
So would I be content tolive and die,
and without questioningsof the heart,
gladly accept Heaven'swill.

归去来兮，田园将芜胡不归！既自以心为形役，奚惆怅而独悲？悟已往之不谏，知来者之可追。实迷途其未远，觉今是而昨非。

舟遥遥以轻飏，风飘飘而吹衣。问征夫以前路，恨晨光之熹微。乃瞻衡宇，载欣载奔。僮仆欢迎，稚子候门。三径就荒，松菊犹存。携幼入室，有酒盈樽。引壶觞以自酌，眄庭柯以怡颜。倚南窗以寄傲，审容膝之易安。园日涉以成趣，门虽设而常关。策扶老以流憩，时矫首而遐观。云无心以出岫，鸟倦飞而知还。景翳翳以将入，抚孤松而盘桓。

归去来兮，请息交以绝遊。世与我而相违，复驾言兮焉求？悦亲戚之情话，乐琴书以消忧。农人告余以春及，将有事于西畴。或命巾车，或棹孤舟。既窈窕以寻壑，亦崎岖而经邱。木欣欣以向荣，泉涓涓而始流。善万物之得时，感吾生之行休。

遑遑欲何之？富贵非吾愿，帝乡不可期。怀良辰以孤往，或植杖而耘耔。登东皋以舒啸，临清流而赋诗。聊乘化以归尽，乐夫天命复奚疑！
