　　《猫》的故事取材于托马斯•斯蒂恩•艾略特（Thomas Stems Eliot）的诗作《擅长装扮的老猫经Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats》。
　　英国著名音乐剧作曲家安德鲁•洛依德•韦伯（Andrew Lloyd Webber，1948—）改编、作曲，他找到特雷沃•努恩（Trevor Nunn）作词兼导演。
　　《猫》在1981年5月11日首演于新伦敦剧院。1982年10月7日，《猫》在美国首演于百老汇冬园剧院
