具正反两面含义的词语例释

　　1. adjure 
　　(1) 诚挚地请求或恳求 
　　She adjured her husband to grant a divorce. 她恳求丈夫同意离婚。 
　　(2) 以起誓的形式严命 
　　The policemen adjured the suspects to tell the truth.警察严令嫌疑犯说出真相。 
　　2. as luck would have it 
　　(1) 幸运地，碰巧 
　　As luck would have it, I have the chance to further my studies abroad. 真幸运,我有到国外留学的机 会。 
　　(2) 不幸地 
　　As luck would have it, he was killed in a traffic accident. 很不幸，他死于一起交通事故。 
　　3. comprise 
　　(1) 由(部分)组成；由……构成 
　　The council comprises fifty members. 该委员会由50位委员组成。 
　　(2) (部分)组成(整体)；构成 
　　Seminars and lectures comprised the day’s activities. 专题讨论和讲座是这一天的全部活动内容。 
　　4. consult 
　　(1) vt. 请教 
　　She consulted a lawyer about her divorce. 她向律师请教有关她离婚的事宜。 
　　(2) vi. 当顾问；提供咨询 
　　Mr. Johnson consults for a large building firm. 约翰逊先生给一家大建筑公司作顾问。 
　　5. dust 
　　(1) 清扫……上的灰尘；除去……的灰尘 
　　Mother always dusts the furniture after sweeping. 妈妈总是在扫完地后掸一下家具上的灰尘。 
　　(2) 使沾上灰尘或粉末 
　　I have dusted my car, I will let one wash it. 我的汽车满是尘土，我得让人把它冲洗干净。 
　　6. enjoin 
　　(1) 命令(某人)做…… 
　　The officer enjoined the troops to move on. 军官命令部队继续前进。 
　　(2)禁止(某人)做…… 
　　The government has enjoined the distillery to produce this kind of alcohol. 政府已禁止该厂生产这种酒。 
　　7. learn 
　　(1) 学习 
　　Have you learned to operate a computer? 你学过用计算机吗？ 
　　(2)使获得知识；教导，教训 
　　This will learn you to keep out of mischief. 这将教训你不要再捣蛋了。 
　　8. lease 
　　(1)(按合同)租借 
　　The company leased the cars from a local supplier. 该公司从当地供应商那里租来汽车。 
　　(2) (在合同期内)出租 
　　We’ll lease out that land down there to hunting clubs. 我们将把下边那块土地出租给打猎俱乐部。 
　　9. mean 
　　(1) 低劣的，平庸的 
　　She bore a child of mean intelligence. 她生了个低能儿。 
　　(2) 出色的，优秀的 
　　He is a mean chess-player. 他是个出色的国际象棋选手。 
　　10. nice 
　　(1) 好的，令人愉快的,宜人的 
　　The children had a nice time in the park. 孩子们在公园玩得很高兴。 
　　(2)坏的，令人不愉快的 
　　You are a nice friend: you won’t even lend me￡5! 你真不够朋友，连5镑钱都不肯借给我! 
　　11. overlook 
　　(1) 忽视，忽略，没注意到 
　　My calculation was wrong because I overlooked one tiny point. 我的计算有误，因为我忽略了一个小数点。 
　　(2) 监督，管理，指导 
　　Mr. Smith overlooks teaching and studying. 史密斯先生管理教学工作。 
　　12. oversight 
　　(1)疏忽；失察 
　　It was oversight that caused the accident.事故是由疏忽造成的。 
　　(2)照管；监督 
　　Under the oversight of a nurse, the patient made a remarkable recovery. 在护士的悉心照料下，病人的情况有了明显的好转。 
　　13. public school 
　　(1) （英寄宿制收费）私立学校 
　　Eton and Harrow are two of England’s most famous public schools. 伊顿和哈罗是英国最有名的两所私立学校。 
　　(2) (美澳等地方免费) 公立学校 
　　Catherine went to a public school at the age of fifteen.凯瑟琳15岁时进一家公立学校读书。 
　　14. put away 
　　(1)放好，收好；储存 
　　The workers put away the tools before they leave the workshop. 工人们在离开车间以前把工具收好。 
　　(2) 放弃，抛弃 
　　He has put away the idea of becoming an artist. 他已经放弃了成为一名画家的想法。 
　　15. ravel 
　　(1) vt.使(线，纤维)纠缠；使混乱，弄乱 
　　The kid has been playing with the wool and has ravelled it up. 小家伙一直在玩毛线，把线弄得乱成一团。 
　　(2) vi. (编织物）散成线；解除 
　　Bind the edge of the rug so that it won’t ravel. 给地毯镶个边以免开线。 
　　16. rent 
　　(1) 租借 
　　They rented a cottage at the seaside for Christmas holidays. 他们在海滨租了一处别墅来度圣诞假期。 
　　 (2) 出租 
　　The village rents this land to a company at $5,000 a year. 村民们以每年5000美元的价格把这块地租给一家公司。 
　　17. root 
　　(1)使……生根成长，使牢固树立 
　　Our politics are rooted in our values. 我们的政治观念深植于我们的价值观中。 
　　(2) 根除，连根拔除 
　　The boss rooted the young manager from the position. 老板撤了这年轻经理的职。 
　　18. screen 
　　(1)放映 
　　A new film is screened in this cinema every week. 这家影院每周都放映新电影。 
　　(2) 掩蔽 
　　The row of people screened the parade from our view. 人群遮住了视线，使我们看不见游行。 
　　19. scan 
　　(1) 仔细查看，审视 
　　His mother scanned his face to see if he was telling the truth. 妈妈仔细查看他的脸色，看他是否在说实话。 
　　(2) 浏览，匆忙地阅读 
　　He scanned the newspaper while having his breakfast.他在吃早餐时浏览了一下报纸。 
　　20. table 
　　(1) 把（议案等）提出讨论；把……列入议事日程 
　　The parliamentary representatives have tabled a new bill. 议员们提出了一项新法案。 
　　(2) 延期讨论；搁置（议案等） 
　　The committee tabled the proposal until later meeting. 委员会将那项议案搁置到下次会议上讨论。 
　　21. trim 
　　(1)修剪；(切除不规则部分）使某物整齐、光滑 
　　They are trimming the bushes. 他们在修剪灌木。 
　　(2)装饰；点缀 
　　She trimmed her collar and cuffs with lace. 她用花边装饰衣领和袖口。 
　　22. wear 
　　(1) 磨损，磨平；穿旧 
　　The carpet has worn in several places. 那块地毯有几个地方已经磨损。 
　　(2) 经久，耐用 
　　The raincoat will wear well. 这件雨衣非常耐穿。
