He last made an impact at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games which was held here, and swimmer Rainer Ng wants to wow the home crowd again should Singapore make a successful bid for the 2015 SEA Games.

On Monday, the sports authorities here confirmed that they are studying the possibility of hosting the 2015 Games, and the news was welcomed by members of the fraternity.

Said Ng, 19, who won a silver at the Youth Olympics and is pencilled in for the men's 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke at November's SEA Games in Indonesia: "After such a long time, it's good that we can host it at the newly constructed Sports Hub.

"For me, I really love swimming with the home crowd behind me, and seeing everyone cheering on Team Singapore really gives us a rush. We should aim to do well in 2015 and that will really help to get more Singaporeans interested in sports."

Footballer Safuwan Baharudin, 19, is equally excited at the prospect of playing in the Games' Under-23 competition at the Sports Hub.

Said the national team defender, who made his Games debut in Laos two years ago: "If we do host the Games, it will be my first time playing in the SEA Games in Singapore. It will also be my last as an under-23 player.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance where you get to play on home ground. It will be a great atmosphere with the new stadium and everybody watching us."

Singapore have hosted the biennial event on three occasions: 1973, 1983 and 1993.

The Republic were scheduled to stage the 2007 Games, but deferred it to this year as the Sports Hub was supposed to begin construction after mid-2007. But escalating costs brought on by the 2008 global financial crisis caused a further delay, and the S$1.33 billion project will only be completed in April 2014.

Added Singapore Rugby Union president Low Teo Ping: "It would be an opportune time since we have the Sports Hub, and it's good to break it in with a regional event like the SEA Games in 2015."
