U.S. President Barack Obama's nominee to be the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on Tuesday warned against possible steep cuts to the defense budget, saying it means "high risk" for the nation.
Martin Dempsey, who currently serves as Army Chief of Staff, made the warning during his confirmation hearing at the Senate Armed Services Committee. He made clear his opposition to the proposal of doubling the 400-billion-dollar defense spending cuts in 12 years ordered by Obama.
Dempsey told the Senators that defense spending, which is well over 600 billion annually, "didn't cause the debt crisis, nor will it solve it."

The U.S. Congress is now deadlocked on negotiations to raise the country's debt ceiling before Aug. 2, when the world's biggest economy and debtor would go into default. The U.S. borrowing limit, currently at 14.29 trillion dollars, was reached on May 16.
Lawmakers looking for ways to cut the deficit have proposed even deeper defense cuts than Obama's plan, envisioning 800 billion or 1 trillion over the coming decade.
In reaction to the notion, Dempsey said during the hearing that achieving the 400 billion is already extremely difficult, making 800 billion would be "extraordinarily difficult and very high risk. "
