Former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad was admitted to hospital on Wednesday morning for treatment of chest infection.

His assistant Sufi Yusoff said in a statement that Mahathir arrived at the National Heart Insitute in Kuala Lumpur at around 6 am local time after suffering a fever and cough over the past two days.

He is currently undergoing intravenous antibiotic treatment and intensive chest physiotherapy, said Sufi, adding that Mahathir is expected to stay in hospital for a week.

Mahathir, 85, was the fourth and longest-serving prime minister in Malaysia from 1981 to 2003.
